About Hydrogen Sulfide Monitoring Equipment

While a low level of Hydrogen Sulfide Monitoring Equipment may have a pleasant rotten egg smell, it is nevertheless a poisonous gas that can cause acute symptoms such as a burning sensation in the nose, throat and stomach. The toxicity of H2S is enhanced in the presence of moisture and it can quickly reach lethal levels at concentrations below 10 ppm or 15 ppm. For this reason it is critical to monitor for this dangerous gas and install a H2S monitoring system that will alert personnel when the concentration is approaching dangerous levels.

Safety First: Exploring Hydrogen Sulfide Monitoring Equipment

Portable gas detectors use an electrochemical sensor that reacts with hydrogen sulfide molecules in a sample gas to produce a current flow proportional to the amount of H2S present. These sensors are a much more accurate and reliable method of H2S measurement than subjective methods such as stain tubes, particularly in applications that require trace measurements of very low concentrations.

Many personal H2S monitors feature a digital display of the measured gas concentration for added user convenience. This is especially helpful when working in a manure pit or tractor cab where it can be difficult to determine the H2S concentration without a digital readout.

For a more comprehensive safety solution, fixed gas detection systems are available that incorporate an H2S gas sensor for continuous monitoring of ambient areas where the danger is greater. These H2S detectors are commonly found in waste water treatment plants and oil & gas fields where workers are regularly exposed to a variety of hazardous chemicals.
